Earthpill is a web community which allows readings of the electricity consumption of home appliances to be shared amongst people for the purpose of energy conservation.
Readings of consumption are taken, using a plug-in power consumption meter, when the appliance is turned on and when it is on standby power. Members of the community enter this information on the Website so that others may access it without the need to measure the appliance themselves.
Earthpill also provides an audit function so that a list of items in a household, school or business can be produced for the purpose of quantifying electricity consumption and finding which appliances are using the most electricity overall.
Earthpill was launched in 2008 and was developed in London, UK.
Earthpill is mentioned in an article in Institution of Engineering and Technology (reprinted here [1]).
