Images cannot be embedded from other sites. They need to be uploaded and then added to an article.

Most images must be freely licensed. However, Wikipedia accepts non-free images in different cases. If you have any questions about copyright and images, you can go to Media copyright questions.

To upload images, you need to make an account. If you don't want to do that, you can ask someone else to upload an image for you at Files for upload.

Free images

You should upload any free images to Wikimedia Commons using your Wikipedia account. Wikimedia Commons is a central collection of images and other media that can be used on Wikipedia and affiliated sites. You can add images uploaded to Commons to an article in the same way as images uploaded to Wikipedia.[1]

If the image has been published before but you want to freely license it, you will need to send an e-mail according to Wikimedia Commons's form letter to confirm the license.

Non-free images

If your article is a submission to Articles for creation, a draft, or a sandbox, you can't add non-free images just yet. You will have to wait until it becomes an actual "live" article. (You can still add free images, though.)

Non-free images must be uploaded to Wikipedia (not Wikimedia Commons) and meet certain requirements. These are images that serve to illustrate a subject in a way that no free version could.

Common examples are:

  • Logos of organizations, products, and services
  • Screenshots of websites, software, and video games
  • Film posters
  • Title cards of television programs
  • Cover art for musical recordings

Non-free images must be kept to a minimum. They must be of a low resolution, and there should only be one in an article.

You can upload non-free images to Wikipedia by using the File Upload Wizard.

Unacceptable non-free images

Some non-free images can be replaced by free versions that achieve the same goal, so the non-free versions are not allowed. These include:

  • Non-free photographs of living people
  • Non-free photographs of buildings and other objects visible to the public
  • Non-free diagrams and illustrations
