Jaime Fernando Macías Alarcón (Guayaquil, Ecuador October 31, 1987) is an Ecuadorian sports journalist and analyst.

Macías has been part of sports broadcasts and programs in different international channels, both in Spanish and English. In his professional career in Ecuador, he has worked for TC Televisión as a commentator for two World Cups and the Ecuadorian Championship, as well as an analyst for the Champions League in Canal Uno. At the international stage, he began as a studio panelist and analyst for Bein Sports’ broadcasts of La Liga in Spain along with the main European soccer tournaments for the United States. Macías is currently part of the talent that broadcasts the MLS for Apple TV. He also analyzes European soccer on the show Fútbol Infinito, which he co-created with Argentinean journalist Eduardo Biscayart.

Beginnings[edit]

On March 21, 2004 1 , Macías made his first television appearance at the age of 15, commentating the Formula 1 Malaysian Grand Prix for Canal Uno. The following year, Macías was part of the cast of the program Diálogo Deportivo, with a segment on motor racing when he was still in high school and was part of the youth divisions at Club Sport Emelec.

TC Televisión[edit]

In 2007 Macías signed his first professional contract, joining the team of commentators at Cabledeportes, a cable network TV sports channel. In 2008, he chose to finish his studies inPamplona Spain, so he became their correspondent from Europe. After showing a good performance, he was signed by TC Televisión, the network which owned Cabledeportes, for coverage of the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa. After the tournament finished, he remained in Europe for another year. In July 2011 Macías returned to Ecuador to join the journalism talent team at the channel along with Diego Arcos.

His arrival coincided with the network’s acquisition of the broadcasting rights to the Ecuadorian Soccer Championships, which allowed him to participate as an on-field reporter and commentator. Together with Diego Arcos, Macías broadcast the Ecuadorian Soccer Championships in 2012, 2013, and 2013, the Conmebol World Cup Qualifiers to Brazil 2014, the 2014 Brazil World Cup and and they were the anchors for the sports news program “TC Deportes”

During this period, Macías was a correspondent for ESPN in Ecuador for the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, Conmebol World Cup Qualifiers, and the 2014 Soccer World Cup. Shortly after commentating on the Ecuadorian Championship Match between Emelec and Barcelona he departed from the network as he had signed an agreement to be part of the BeIN Sports broadcast team for the 2015 Copa América.

BeIN Sports[edit]

Macías was initially hired only for the coverage of the 2015 Copa América held in Chile 3. However, his performance led the network to extend his contract. Macías was a panel member, host, and commentator at the network for 6 years. He broadcast matches from the main European leagues, primarily La Liga and Ligue 1, Conmebol World Cup Qualifiers for Russia 2018 and the CONMEBOL Libertadores and CONMEBOL Sudamericana tournaments.

Macías also covered the 2018 Soccer World Cup providing matchday analysis.

MLS[edit]

During the last quarter of 2021, Macías was hired by the MLS to be a presenter and analyst ofMLS en Español, teaming up with Mexican journalist, Ximena Cerberos. He conducted reports, programs, and interviews on everything related to MLS, as well as the coverage of the MLS Cup 2021 and MLS Cup 2022.

MLS - Apple TV+[edit]

Macías was selected as part of the talent team in charge of the Spanish broadcast of the 2023 MLS season, which is solely broadcast through Apple’s streaming service.

Other Colaborations[edit]

Macías has also worked as a guest analyst for Sirius XM satellite radio, in Salvadorean channel TCS, Honduran channel TVC, Canadian channel ONE Soccer, CNN en Español and for the British newspaper The Guardian.

In 2019 and 2021, Macías was a guest panelist at the Soccer Conference organized byPrinceton and Yale.

Fútbol Infinito[edit]

In February 2019, Macías together with his friend and colleague, Eduardo Biscayart, decided to create a podcast whose main objective was to publish the talks they had at the end of each European soccer matchday, which was how Fútbol Infinito was born. Shortly after, and without planning it, they managed to establish it as a sport analysis program broadcasted periodically and also on YouTube.

In 2022, the program provided on-site coverage of the World Cup in Qatar. With a daily analisis program at the end of each matchday.

Macías was a goalkeeper for the youth divisions of Club Sport Emelec Academy between 2003 and 2006. His last year coincided with his first and only call-up for a first division match, where he deputized for Marcelo Elizaga. The match ended in a 1-1 draw against Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito. During this year he had a brief stint with the Brooklyn Knights of New York before returning to Emelec where he finished the season as runner-up in the 2006 Ecuadorian Championship.

In 2007 Macías spent time with Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Guayaquil, coached by former Barcelona SC goalkeeper Rolando Guerrero.

During his time in Spain, in 2008, Macías played in the 5 th division of that country with C.D. Universidad de Navarra and in 2009 with C.D. Subiza, which was the last club that Macías represented.

In 2012 and 2013 he won the provincial, national, and Rotax Max championships, along with being the South American Runner-up.

On January 2014, he placed fifth in the sixteenth season of the FWT Formula Kart Racing, which took place in Homestead – Florida.
