Solheimsviken is a bay and a neighbourhood in the city of Bergen, Norway. The eponymous bay is situated at the end of the strait of Damsgårdssundet, at the entrance to Store Lungegårdsvann. The boundaries of the neighbourhood are not clearly defined, but generally include Danmarks plass, the areas around the Solheimsgaten street, and parts of the residential areas west, east and south of the bay.
Located near the city centre of Bergen, Solheimsviken was the first urbanized area in Årstad muncipality (now Årstad borough). It has traditionally been dominated by heavy industry, although none of this remains. In recent years, inner Solheimsviken has been developed into a business park with the presence of several companies including the headquarters of GC Rieber, as well as the convention centre Arenum. There are further plans for new combined hotel and convention centre as well as a new regional headquarters for the financial group DnB NOR.[1]
History

[edit]The industrial history of Solheimsviken began in 1855 with the founding of Bergens Mekaniske Verksted (BMV) in 1855. BMV was established by the businessman Michael Krohn, who also owned several other maritime businesses. By 1875, the work force had increased to 400 workers not including apprentices. In 1965, the shipyard was sold to Aker, and became a fully integrated part of the ship yard company in 1968. The decline of the shipyard started with the building of three handymax size tankers 1982-1983, which lead to a great financial loss for Aker. BMV was sold to a number of local investors in 1983, followed by a large layoff.[2] In 1985, continuing financial troubles lead to the sale of the shipyard to its workers. Unable to get out of its financial quagmire, BMV, now known as Solheimsviken AS, went bankrupt in 1991.[3]
