Lemet Máhtte Eira Sara (Born 15 December 2000) is a translator know for his work on Minecraft.
Personal life[edit]
Lemet Máhte Eira Sara was born on 15 December 2000[1] at the University Hospital of North Norway in Tromsø to parents Gunhild Laila Sara and Mathis K. Eira.[2] He has three siblings.[3] He studied at Narvik Upper Secondary School after having moved to Bjerkvik when he was 9.[4] After a career fair at his school, he stated in the local newspaper Fremover that he wanted to be an engineer.[5] In 2015, Eira Sara was confirmed at Bjerkvik Church.[6] During his final year at the school, he partook in the russefeiring ("Russ celebration"). He became the russepresident that represented his school after receiving the most votes in the election.[7] After finishing his education in Narvik in 2019, he moved back to Tromsø to study drone technology at the University of Tromsø.[8]
Eira Sara is Sámi. He views himself as privileged compared to older generations of Sámis because he is able to openly express his identity and culture without fear of being stigmatised.[4]
Translation work[edit]
Eira Sara started translating Minecraft into Northern Sami in November 2019 when he was studying at the University of Tromsø. His friend who was learning the language wanted more opportunities to learn it, so Eira Sara got the motivation to translate the game because it was something they had in common. He had to translate fourteen thousand words from English, receiving help from his grandparents[8] and Facebook pages for language enthusiasts.[9] Aftenposten reported that he could spend up to twelve hours translating on some days.[10]
He received the Sámi Language Lift Award (Northern Sami: Sámi giellaloktenbálkkašupmi, Norwegian: Samisk språkløftepris) from the Sámi Parliament of Norway during Sámi Language Week in October 2020 for his translation work.[11][12]
