History

[edit]

Oak street has been in New Orleans since the 1800s, during this time the street acted as the pivotal center for the Carrolton neighborhood. Anything that the residents wanted to do or needed could all be found on Oak Street. This soon changed once people were able to get their own cars, instead of using Oak Street to get what they need, residents drove else where in the city to shop, eat, and gather. The increased accessibility to cars caused a negative impact on the commercialism of Oak Street, it was almost forgotten and a lot of buildings were destroyed and left vacant. Later on in the 1970s - 80s attention was brought back to Oak street which then saved the buildings and businesses that were left vacant. This attention saved Oak Street and brought it back to its original commercial glory[3].

This festival Is a free outdoor event that brings out many different people to enjoy tasting different versions of Po-Boy's, parades, live music, and dancing [4]. The Po-Boy sandwich is comfort food for residents of Louisiana, more specifically the city of New Orleans. Po-Boy sandwiches are served on New Orleans French bread and are topped with various things. The Po-Boy sandwich originally came from two brothers', Benny and Clovis Martin, small coffee stand and french restaurant. The name " Po-Boy" came from the Martin brothers serving streetcar strikers in 1929 the sandwiches free of charge and announcing that another " poor boy" was coming to get another sandwich. There was no offense taken towards the name because the Martin brothers were both old streetcar workers [6].
