Cristae are vital in the apoptotic pathway in advanced eukaryotic organisms. Of all cytochrome c present in the mitochondria, more than 85% is found in invaginations of the cristae. Cytochrome c, when released from the outer membrane into the cytoplasm signals apoptosis[1]. Destabilization of the crista structure has been also associated with several neurodegernative diseases. These diseases include Alzheimer's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease.[1]
