MSLU Library and Knowledge Management Centre (formerly known as Scientific Library of MSLU) is a part of educational structure in Moscow State Linguistic University.

The Library was created in 1930[1], based on the collection of foreign languages textbooks. The books were donated from several organizations, such as Communist University of the National Minorities of the West, Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, personal collection of a famous Soviet linguist Rozalia Shor and other sources.

History[edit]

Across its history, the library was led by numerous librarians:

1943 - 1948 the library was headed by Vera Romanova, who was the director of the University in the beginning The Great Patriotic War in 1941;

1958 - 1972 - Nina Alexandrova (worked in the library from 1949);

1972 - 1997 - Tamara Zhalnina (worked in the library from 1966);

1997 - 2012 - Vera Bykovskaya (worked in the library from 1977);

2012 - 2016 - Kseniya Danilyuk.

Starting from 2016 the director of Library and Knowledge Management Centre is Svetlana Manukhina.[2]

The Library Collection[edit]

Currently, the library collection comprises 600 thousand hard copies and 4 million electronic documents.

The LKMC includes educational, scientific, fiction literature in Russian, European and Eastern Languages. The majority of literature is devoted to Linguistics, Language Education, Language History and Translation Studies. There are also universal and specialized encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, published in Russia, CIS Countries and internationally, too. Apart from that, there is a unique collection of encyclopedias, dictionaries and fictional books dating from the XIX century in French, English and ancient languages, such as Latin, Ancient Greek, Old French.

The employees of the LKMC managed to preserve one-of-a-kind publications: a collection of Moscow Commercial Institute, which was located in the current building of MSLU, published in 1904, commemorating a 100-year anniversary of the institute. Currently, these rare pictures are a part of permanent exhibition in the MSLU Museum located in main building on Ostozhenka, 38.

Today, MSLU students are able to access electronic documents through MSLU Digital Library, created by the University in 2016.[3] The electronic collection compromises manuals and textbooks, published by the professors of the University, graduation papers, PHD works and dissertations, defended in MSLU from 1939.

The Video-project "Author-sessions", started in 2016, has a format of interviews with university professors, writers, journalists and foreign guests.[4]

The LKMC frequently organizes teaching trainings seminars and webinars, targeted at University professors and employees.

The work of the library is ensured by 8 departments:

Austrian Library[edit]

History of establishment[edit]

The Austrian Library, or Österreich-Bibliothek Moskau[10] was first opened in 1993 in Moscow. First it was located in the building of Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2000, it moved to the MSLU, as a part of Foreign Affairs Ministry of Austria's mission and "Cultural Forum"[11] between Russia and Austria.

The library stock of the Austrian Library consists of about 8000 books in German, including: 3000 copies of Austrian fiction, historical literature, philology, art, politics, psychology, economy, law, as well as monthly and weekly newspapers and magazines. In addition, the library offers multimedia collection in forms of audio and video materials. The study hall is equipped with modern technical facilities.

The library frequently hosts lecturers, seminars and other events connected to Austrian culture and Austrian German. Annually, the library holds meetings with Austrian writers, lecturers and translators, book presentations are carried out frequently.

The head of the library is Tatiana Zorina, who is also a professor of in the Department of German Stylistics and Lexicology of MSLU.[12]

The activity of the library is regulated by the "Provision on Austrian Library" of 2020[13].

Traditions and activities[edit]

  • The Austrian Library organizes Catholic Easter and Christmas celebrations, which includes traditional pastry baking, the decoration of the library, quizzes and concerts.
  • Austrian Ministry of Education organizes Linguistic Country-Studying Seminar. It lasts for 2 full days, and is popular with the teachers and professor. It is an open-access event for everybody who is interested in the topics. In the end attendees receive a Certificate of Professional Development.
  • In 2000 the library was licensed to hold language exam OSD.
  • The Library organizes board-game evenings in order to promote Austrian culture.
  • There is a choir representing the library called "Engelein Chor", participating in numerous competitions and concerts. The conductor of the choir is the cantor of Sretensky Monastery. [14]
