The Cumberland County, until 21 March 1778, known as the Unity County, was a short-lived county in Vermont Republic. It was established on 17 March 1778, after the acquisition of the counties of Cumberland and Gloucester from the state of New York, United States. It existed until 1781, when it got partitioned into four other counties: Orange, Windham, Windsor, and Washington.
History[edit]
in Vermont, comprising two counties which seceded from New York in 1777: Cumberland County and Gloucester County. On 17 March 1778 Bennington and Unity Counties created as the first two original counties in Vermont.[1] On 21 March 1778 Unity County renamed Cumberland County.[2] In 1781, this county was broken up into three counties in Vermont and one that eventually became part of New Hampshire.
