Arthur Goldschmidt is Professor Emeritus of Middle East History at the Pennsylvania State University. He received his A.M. in Middle Eastern Studies in 1961 and his Ph.D. in History and Middle Eastern Studies in 1968, both from Harvard University. His publications include two textbooks: A Concise History of the Middle East (9 editions to date) and Modern Egypt: The Formation of a Nation-State (2 editions to date). He has also translated and annotated The Memoirs and Diaries of Muhammad Farid, an Egyptian Nationalist Leader (1868-1919), and written A Historical Dictionary of Egypt (2nd and 3rd editions) and A Biographical Dictionary of Modern Egypt, as well as articles, book chapters, and reviews. He is especially interested in 19th and 20th century Egyptian history.

Along with co-author and editor, Professor Lawrence Davidson, a scholar and expert on the Middle East, the book (A Concise History of the Middle East: Westview Press) is widely known as the authority on Middle East history and remains a best-seller on the market.
