Codete – Polish IT company launched in 2010[2] with the headquarters in Cracow, and offices in Lublin and Berlin. The company supports the enterprises in using digitization in everyday activities.[3] Primarily, Codete was only extending programmers, but in time the team grew to include ex g. developers and engineers working with JAVA, Scala, PHP, Python, Flutter, and Swift/Kotlin technologies.[4]
History
[edit]Karol Przystalski, Artur Olechowski, and Grzegorz Śmiałek for the first time met during studies at Jagiellonian University in Cracow. They initially carried out a project to transfer the law firm database to a virtual disk. This initiative gave them an award for the most interesting startup, given by the Lewiatan Confederation. Even though that the project was not implemented, Przystalski, Olechowski i Śmiałek decided to set up a company - Codete.[5]
The first Codete’s office was opened in Cracow in 2010, the second one was launched in Lublin in 2016. Due to the limitations of the German law that affected several company’s clients, the third office was opened - in Berlin. At the end of 2019, the headquarters of Codete was moved to Na Zjeździe 11 street (Cracow, Podgórze neighborhood).[6]
Codete Founders
[edit]Karol Przystalski graduated from Jagiellonian University, where he gained the title of Ph.D. in Technical Sciences. He is an author of several programming publications, the participant of many international conferences (TestDive[7], DevDay[8], TEDx Lublin[9], DeveloperWeek Europe[10], BigData Conference[11], Skład QA[12], Berlin ML), and in the past, he used to be an o’Reilly[13] trainer. Przystalski built up a research department working on solutions based on machine learning and Big Data. At Codete, he is responsible for the IT field, he also cooperates with Fortune 500 companies on Data Science projects.[14]
Grzegorz Śmiałek is a graduate of law faculty at the Jagiellonian University, the Vienna Economic University, and the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. He is a co-founder of the Medtransfer project[15], and in November 2021 he took part in the VBdots[16] masterclass meeting organized by the Connecting Dots Foundation. During the event, Śmiałek was talking about the challenges that are faced by a person who changes their role from the managing partner into the co-founder of a startup. In Codete’s structure, Śmiałek is responsible for the financial department, HR, and recruitment processes.[17]
Artur Olechowski graduated from the faculty of law at the Jagiellonian University, and the Economic University in Cracow. He is a speaker during the international Finweek conference[18], dedicated to financial innovations. At Codete, Olechowski is responsible for the sales and marketing fields.[19]
International Development
[edit]Codete’s activities include cooperation with international and domestic clients. During the first phase of development, the greatest emphasis was placed on the companies from the German-speaking areas (DACH region): Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.[20]
Currently, Codete cooperates with businesses all over the world (ex g. Israel, Great Britain, Sweden, the USA, or Hong Kong).[21]

Codete’s activities include software development, and online or mobile applications creation, as well as IT research, development and consulting. Since the second half of 2020, the company cooperates with the Cracow University Hospital[23] in conducting research and development activities.[24]
Amongst Codete’s clients[25], there are fintech enterprises (ex g. these focused mainly on cryptocurrencies), and companies offering services in the field of healthcare, retail and electronic trade, marketing, media, traveling, logistics, and transportation, as well as the car industry. Codete cooperates ex g. with such brands as BMW, Kia Motors, Daimler, Wells Fargo, HSBC, Motorola, or Deloitte.[26]
Medtransfer
[edit]The Medtransfer project improves communication between patients and doctors by enabling the transfer of imaging test results (CT scan, radiography) using an encrypted link. Innocenta Dźwierzyńska, the co-founder of the Medtransfer platform saw the need for a quick test results shipment after her own surgery, when “(she thought that) it would be a perfect solution to create a kind of application that let the users send their test results quickly and safely. And then, the doctors would be able to open these files easily and without having to download them to the computer”. The Medtransfer project has been being implemented with Codete support since 2020.[27]
Initiatives
[edit]Besides the commercial projects, Codete also organizes several educational events, engaging in cooperation with the beneficiaries eg g. from the medical environment.[28]
Hack4Med CRACoV: Hackathon
[edit]This is an initiative organized by the Cracow University Hospital and Codete, consisting of a 24-hours competition[29] in finding the solution to the problem presented by the organizers of the event. The name Hack4Med: CRACoV was created from a combination of words: Cracow and Covid-19.[30]
The leitmotif of the first edition of the medical hackathon was “covid risk calculator”. The main goal of finding the solution to this problem was to assign the patients suffering from Covid-19 to one of three groups: patients with the mild course of the disease, the one with the severe course of the disease, and a high-risk of death patients. To get reliable results, the competitors were working on the real, fully anonymous sets of patients’ data. They also had an opportunity to consult all of the parameters with the doctors who were present at the event.[31]
25 best teams consisting of IT and data processing specialists, as well as analytics, were qualified for the finals.[32] The winners of the 2021 edition - the “6 and 8 PKB” team, donated the whole prize (30 000 PLN) to the University Childrens’ Hospital.[33] The name of the team refers to 6,8 % of gross domestic product (pol. PKB) which is the amount that should be donated to finance health protection.[34]
CodeteCON
[edit]Cyclical technological conference dedicated to the IT environment, organized by the Codete company in Cracow and Lublin since 2016. The main parts of the CodeteCON program are lectures, thematic workshops, and lightning talks with the invited guests that take place on the main stage. The topics of the conference are focused mainly on the back-end, front-end, and Data Science.[35]
Prizes and Awards
[edit]International Awards
[edit]In 2019, in the third edition of the ranking presented by Financial Times Magazine, the partnership from Cracow was placed in the group of a thousand fastest-developing companies in Europe. The FT 1000: Europe’s Fastest Growing Companies rating takes into consideration the highest percentage increase in revenues and, based on this data, it publishes the final list of enterprises. In 2019, Codete took 366th place.[36]
In 2021, Codete was awarded in the Clutch 100 for Sustained Growth ranking, created by the B2B research enterprise with its headquarters in Washington. The participants of the rating were ranked based on the absolute rate of revenue growth in 2017-2020, and Codete took 82nd place among all the companies classified in the IT category.[37]
