I am an industrial historian but also have an interest in more general social and economic history. I have a PhD from Nottingham University in history, my thesis was called Canal Boat People, 1840-1970. Since then I have taught history for the School of Continuing Education at Nottingham University and for the WEA. I have written three books: Women and Children of the Cut, Canal Boatmen's Missions and Ashby Workhouse and the Ashby de la Zouch Poor Law Union. I am a member of the Leicestershire Industrial History Society, The Railway and Canal Historical Society (currently President), the Association of Industrial Archaeology and I am a trustee of Ashby de la Zouch Museum.
