The light from the lighthouse of Alexandria not only warned ships away from the dangerous coastline, but it was a welcome beacon for weary travelers. It stood a symbol of promise of safety and of survival.

Stood guard outside of the busy port of Alexandria

The lighthouse shone for nearly 1700 years before it was badly damaged a series of earthquakes
