The Command of the Navy in the Caribbean (Dutch: Commandement der Zeemacht in het Caribisch Gebied) is the part of the Dutch Koninklijke Marine, which is based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The navy has two bases on Curaçao, one on Aruba and one on Sint Maarten.

The military in the Caribbean acts against, for example, illegal drug trade, illegal fishing and environmental offenses. They also support search and rescue operations and offer emergency aid after hurricanes and other disasters. The navy supports the civil authorities in Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, and Saba.

The protection of the Dutch territory in the Caribbean is a job for just the Dutch armed forces. The Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands doesn't have NATO-protection.

Commander in the Caribbean[edit]

The Commander of the Navy in the Caribbean (Dutch: Commandant der Zeemacht in het Caribisch Gebied (CZMCARIB)) is the highest ranking Dutch officer in the Caribbean region. On behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Defense, he provides for the defense of the country and the enforcement of international law in the overseas parts of the kingdom. The commander also commands the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard. The position has been fulfilled since June 2017 by Brigadier general of the Marines Peter Jan de Vin.[1] He succeeded commandeur Hans Lodder, who held the post since June 2014.[2]

Parera naval base[edit]

In the capital of Curaçao, Willemstad, is the naval base 'Marinebasis Parera'. The Commander of the Navy in the Caribbean with his staff is based on this base and is the home port of the Royal Netherlands Navy's station ship, usually a frigate.
