Grupo Folklorico de LMU

[edit]

What originally started as a course offered by the institution, Ballet Folklórico de LMU, the organization, was founded in 1973 at Loyola Marymount University. The group took a brief hiatus in 2007, due to low numbers in enrollment, however was brought back to the institution in 2013 by three strong Mujeres, Citlaly Arroyo, Marianna Hernandez, and Cecilia Herrera. The group has been going strong ever since.

In March 2017, then and current President Athena Martinez (Class of 2018) founded what has become the groups annual Spring showcase, Sueño de México. The showcase was created as a means of bringing the Latino community at LMU together, and with the help of fellow executive board members, Veronica Arellano (Class of 2019) and Isabel Aguirre (Class of 2019), the event did just that. Current director of Chicano Latino Student Services at LMU, Joel Gutierrez, also aided in the venture, and has called Sueño de México the most successful Latino Cultural event in the history of LMU's campus, based on overall attendance, event follow-through, and feedback.

[edit]

This past academic semester, Fall 2017, current President Athena Martinez, alongside Veronica Arellano, Isabel Aguirre, and group director, Javier Garibay, officially transitioned the groups name from Ballet Folklórico de LMU to Grupo Folklórico de LMU, to distance themselves from a more Spanish centered association, and reclaim further the Indigenous roots of traditional Folklórico Mexicano.
