Kyz Zhibek - Kazakh folk lyric-epic poem, named for the heroine. Translated means Girl-Silk, Silk girl. This work is the pearl of Kazakh folklore. The Kazakh "Romeo and Juliet" celebrates loyalty in love, friendship, courage and patriotism.

The love story of the brave warrior Tolegen from the Zhagalbayly / Zhetyru clan and the beautiful Zhibek from the Shekty clan / Alimuly / (both of the Younger Zhuz) ends tragically due to tribal strife. Tolegen, who fought for the hand and heart of Zhibek, was treacherously murdered by Bekezhan (batyr, a rival of the Zibek clan). Zhibek after 9 years married the younger brother of Tolegen Sansyzbay.

The romantic epos unfolding at the beginning of the 16th century, when the Kazakh Khanate was first formed from many steppe clans and tribes, was recorded in the 19th century. It was first published in 1894 in Kazan in the version prepared by the Kazakh ethnographer and poet Zhusipbek Shaykhislamuly [1]. Today, sixteen original versions of the epos are known.

In 1988, the poem was translated into Russian by Bakhytzhan Kanapyanov.

In 2003, a book was published in the series “Epos of the Peoples of Eurasia”, which contains the best versions of the two epics “Kozy Korpesh - Bayan Sulu” and “Kyz-Zhibek”.

Kyz-Zhibek poem is included in the world cultural heritage, 2008 was declared by UNESCO as the year of the 500th anniversary of the epic. The anniversary is included in the 2008 UNESCO calendar of significant dates.

In 1934, on the basis of the folk poem, the first Kazakh opera of the same name was created (music by E. G. Brusilovsky, libretto by G. Musrepov). Brusilovsky used about fifty folk kyuis and songs, among which was the aria of Kyz Zhibek, which is in fact the song of akyn Ybraya “Gak-ku”. Dedicated to the famous singer Kulyash Baiseitova.


In 1970, the Kazakh director Sultan Ahmet Khodzhikov took on Kazakhfilm eponymous two-part tape, roles are played by Meruert Utekesheva (Kiz Zhibek) Koeman Tastanbekov (Tolegen) Asanali Ashimov (Bekezhan) Kenenbay Kozhabekov Mukhtar Bahtygereev, Anuar Moldabekov, Farida Sharipova, Kanabek Baiseitov, Gulfairus Ismailova.

The film was awarded the State Prize of the Kazakh SSR for 1972.

According to the rating of films of the film studio “Kazakhfilm” in the entire history of the Kazakh SSR (1955-1990), it occupies the 8th place - 7.8 million viewers, 331 copies
