Aquatic plant native to Australia, New Zealand, India and East Africa.
Earliest record in North America is 1992 in Hamburg Cove, CT. Found in New Jersey, eastern PA, RI.
Occurs in waters with high clarity and low pH, alkalinity, conductivity, and phosphorous.
Can produce cleistogamous and chasmogamous flowers in response to ecological conditions.
