Fie Schouten (1972) is a Dutch musician, curator and artistic director. She can be heard on the bass clarinet, basset horn, contrabass clarinet in contemporary music, composed and improvised.
Education
[edit]Schouten studied at the Sweelinck Conservatorium (Conservatorium van Amsterdam). She studied clarinet with Herman Braune and bass clarinet with Harry Sparnaay. She followed master classes with Ernesto Molinari at the Darmstadt Summercourse and Festival Impuls Graz.
Bass clarinetist
[edit]Fie Schouten can be heard on many clarinets, but the bass clarinet is her favourite. She performs as a soloist, in small formations, in ensembles and orchestras. She collaborates with other specialists in the field of contemporary composed music and with improvisers. Since 2013, Schouten has been teaching bass clarinet and contemporary music at the Prince Claus Conservatoire in Groningen.
Working with composers
[edit]Many composers have written for and worked together with Fie Schouten. She has made recordings of works by among others Georges Aperghis, Unsuk Chin, Gérard Grisey, Jonathan Harvey, Toshio Hosokawa, Mauricio Kagel, Tobias Klein, Hanna Kulenty, Ton de Leeuw, Theo Loevendie, Enno Poppe, Kaija Saariaho, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Calliope Tsoupaki, and Lotta Wennäkoski.
Artistic leader
[edit]Together with Tobias Klein, Fie Schouten started the Basklarinet Festijn in 2014, a recurring international event featuring the bass clarinet in contemporary composed and improvised music. Since 2019, together with Aspasia Nasopoulou, she has led the concert series for contemporary chamber music Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam. For her contribution to the new music scene in the Netherlands, Fie Schouten received the 1st New Geneco Fair Practice Composition Award (September 2019).
Stockhausen
[edit]Schouten performed MICHAELS REISE um die Erde (solo Schwalbenpärchen) at major festivals in Europe and at the Lincoln Centre NY - with the German Ensemble Musikfabrik and directed by La Fura dels Baus, as well as with the ASKO-Schönberg Ensemble, the Parisian Ensemble Le Balcon and the soloist version with the Utrecht Ensemble Insomnio. She performed LICHT-BILDER (SONNTAG aus LICHT) in the 2011 MusikFabrik/Oper Köln/La Fura dels Baus production; MICHAELION (MITTWOCH aus LICHT) at the London 2012 Festival with the Birmingham Opera Company; HARMONIEN (KLANG) at the MusikTriennale Köln and many other places; BASSETSU TRIO (MITTWOCH aus LICHT) and ROTARY quintet at the Festival d'Automne Paris 2014; BASSETSU solo and TIERKREIS.
