Giulia Guarino or Julia Guarino Fiechter (born 17 July 1897; died 31 July 1985) was an Italian/Uruguayan architect. She was the first Latin American woman to graduate with a degree in architecture in 1923.

She was depicted on a stamp in Uruguay.

Giulia Guarino or Julia Guarino Fiechter (born 17 July 1897; died 31 July 1985) was an Italian/Uruguayan architect.

Education

She studied architecture at the Facultad de Architecture, Universidad de la Republica, Uruguay from 1916 to 1923. She was the first woman to graduate with a degree of architecture in Latin America.

Career

Since very early in her career she was very active in the feminist scene in Uruguay. She was involved in the women's suffrage movement and also flighted for equal civil rights for women. She represented Uruguay abroad as an architect and an active feminist[2]. With Dr. Paulina Luis she co-founded in 1935 the Women's Association of Graduates of the University (AMTU) [3] which....

Some of the buildings she was responsible are School N°4 in San Carlos (1926), School No. 129 in Toledo Nº129 (1931), School N° 110 in Canelones (1932), Rural schools No. 15, 45 y 60 (1939), School N° 39 in Pueblo Centenario (1940), Open air school in Trinidad (1943), Agricultural School in Durazno (1943) and the Viticulture School Presidente Tomás Berreta in Las Piedras (1944) [4].
