I am a writer and extremely interested in the convergence of writing and technology. On the side I read a lot (and write a bit) of science fiction. I am especially intrigued by the degree to which Wikipedia has in a very short time become the most authoritative source of information on Earth, and am committed to helping improve it when and where I can.
In the debate about what Wikipedia is, and its purpose, I am an inclusionist. I believe in the theory that Wikipedia is, or at least ought to become, the sum total of all human knowledge, not just a big encyclopedia. I respect others' views on this, but I see great value in Wikipedia's contributions to individuals' knowledge and ability to access information.
I frequently use Wikipedia to end arguments. I want it to be able to end all arguments; or in other words, I want it to become truly authoritative on truly everything.
I think that the process of bringing this into being will go a long way toward creating genuine understanding, and even peace, in our world, as millions of people involve themselves in one community devoted to that very thing.
Those things being said, Wikipedia is certainly not less than an encyclopedia. It ought to read like one. If you want bias, there's plenty of it out there. Agendas do not belong on Wikipedia. Neither do personal vendettas or political subterfuge. If you want to do that stuff, go buy an ad.
