Patrick Gregory Schmidlinked-in.com/in/patrick-gregory-schmid-1553a8141> is a lawyer and multi-faceted community activist and consultant based in the Cayman Islands. Of mixed Swiss, English and Caymanian origin. He was educated in the Cayman Islands, Canada and the UK. In addition to those countries, he has lived and worked in Australia, China and the United States of America.

Patrick earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Law, (with Honors), from the University of Southampton, England and subsequently a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Law in Guildford, England.

As a Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award recipient, he has was selected to dine with HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the husband of HRH Queen Elizabeth II, at the home of the Governor of the Cayman Islands. He has contributed widely to the successful continued growth of the Cayman Islands.

In particular, he became the first United World Colleges graduate to Chair the United World Colleges Scholarship Foundation and Trust of the Cayman Islands, which has raised over United States dollars five million, to provide scholarships to outstanding young men and women.https://www.caymancompass.com/2005/02/17/scholarship-help/

Patrick chaired, promoted and was recognized for his significant contribution to providing a blueprint to existing Cayman Islands Immigration Law, which replaced an antiquated system that provided no avenue to residency or citizenship nor held employers to the same standard practices. The Vision 2008 National Strategic Plan on Immigration was unanimously accepted by the Cayman Islands’ Legislative Assembly and by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the UK. Patrick Gregory Schmid also made considerable contributions to the formulation of the 2009 Cayman Islands Constitution during its drafting stages, as a member of the negotiating team of the Caymanian Bar Association. That Constitution was adopted by popular referendum in 2009, it introduced the Territory’s first Bill of Rights and is still the Constitution in 2019.

As a young athlete he represented the Cayman Islands in the 1989 CARIFTA Athletic Games in Barbados, shortly after which he was given the opportunity to meet international Brazilian soccer legend, Pele.

Patrick was also the Cayman Islands Youth Ambassador to an International Triennium of young Christian leaders in Indiana, USA.

In 2000 he was a finalist for the Young Caymanian Leadership Award http://www.youngcaymanianleaders.ky/leadership-years/ and was honored for his contributions to improving life in the community, at a gala held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Grand Cayman, which featured Arkansas Governor, (successor in that post to President William Clinton of the USA), Mr. Mike Huckabee, as the Master of Ceremonies.

Being a multi-linguist, he selflessly and voluntarily used those skills in working with various local agencies to assist the recovery process after Hurricane Ivan devastated Grand Cayman in 2004.

Patrick was also a member of the negotiating team which successfully demonopolized telecommunications in the Cayman Islands and has served on numerous other significant boards and committees at a national level in the Cayman Islands, the United Kingdom and Australia.

In 2010, he had the honor of being one of the persons chosen to welcome former United States President William “Bill” Clinton to Grand Cayman, where President Clinton spoke on international financial markets at the Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman.

Patrick is also a former Director of the Caymanian Bar Association and of the International Bar Association.

His father, Captain Peter Schmid is the Honorary Consul for Switzerland in the Cayman Islands. His mother, Ronda Sherlene (nee Hydes) is a retired manager of Grand Cayman’s famous tourism industry.
