Background[edit]

Hallie Flanagan discussed the work of European theatermakers including Edward Gordon Craig, Vsevolod Meyerhold, and Konstantin Stanislavsky with her students at Vassar, leading them to engage in research on expressionism, impressionism, and constructivism at the college's library.[1]

Production[edit]

When played in the constructivist style, lighting fixtures were left visible to the audience.[2]

Reception and legacy[edit]

Experimentation with non-realistic forms of performance in American theaters slowed from the 1920s into the 1930s.[3] Willard Thorp argues that the most significant work of the period was done at the Vassar Experimental Theatre, citing Flanagan's productions of the Proposal as evidence.[4]
