The University Star is a student-operated newspaper that serves Texas State University and residents of San Marcos, Texas. The University Star, located in the Trinity Building of Texas State University-San Marcos, is a student media organization part of Texas State University’s School of Journalism & Mass Communication.

The University Star includes news, opinions, trends and sports. Among notable alumni of the publication is United States President Lyndon B. Johnson. Johnson, who graduated from Texas State University-San Marcos in 1930, was elected editor of The University Star (then known as The College Star) in 1928.


History

The University Star was founded in 1911 by Fred W. Adams who was looking for a way to pay for his school. The University Star is one of the longest consistent products on campus. Mr. Robson is the oldest editor living today.

University Star has 100 employees including full-time, part-time and volunteer workers. Students have full editorial content.

Circulation

  • Prints and distributes 8,000 copies every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during the fall and spring semesters
  • Prints and distributes 3,000 copies every other Wednesday during summer.
  • Available at 70 locations on the Texas State University-San Marcos campus, three locations on Texas State University’s Round Rock campus and more than 40 locations in the city of San Marcos.

Web site

The University Star publishes content online. The Web site has current news, blogs and links to social media. It was recently redone in order to accommodate students better. The University Star incorporates multimedia to the once print-only version of the paper.
