Derek Fung (馮平波 Fung Ping Bor; 24 October 1939-) is a Chinese martial artist from Hong Kong who studied Wing Chun Kung Fu under Yip Man (葉問). He is one of the few remaining first generation students of the legendary Yip Man still teaching today.[1] He began learning Wing Chun in 1954[2] and was a senior Wing Chun colleague of Bruce Lee[3].
During his formative years he competed in numerous beimo (organised bare-knuckle challenge fights) with fighters from several styles, along with his Wing Chun brothers Wong Shun Leung and William Cheung. He became known as 'lightning hands' for his incredible speed, stance, footwork and his willingness to showcase the Wing Chun system in no rules hand to hand combat.[4] At the time his training brothers included Chu Shong Tin (徐尚田), William Cheung Cheuk Hing (張卓慶), Gregory Tsoi Siu Kwong, Victor Kan Wah Chit (簡華捷) and Andrew Ma Hang Lum (馬亨霖).
After moving to Sydney, Australia, Derek continued to refine his knowledge of Wing Chun through years of practice, building upon his real-fight experience in his early years. Now with almost 60 years of experience, Derek is one of the top Wing Chun trainers in the world. Derek opened a new school in Sydney at the iconic Chinese Masonic Hall in 2013 and was featured in Sing Tao Daily. [5]
