From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a draft of a short article on the architect John S. Cleland. It is not intended to be of any use to anyone else just yet.

John Stockwin Cleland, born 23 Feb 1879, Walsall, England, died 21 May 1950, in Pretoria, South Africa. These dates make him a contemporary of Herbert Baker and Edwin Lutyens.

Here is a draft of a thesis, I believe? http://www.up.ac.za/dspace/bitstream/2263/10283/1/CLE%20111-128.pdf

Wikipedia has an article on Groote Schuur Hospital (1938), with this picture:

oh my that's quite big.

Here is an article on the memorial for the battle of Delville Wood in Cape Town: http://www.artefacts.co.za/main/Buildings/bldgframes.php?bldgid=3387&archid=258 . This is distinct from the Delville Wood South African National Memorial near the site of the battle, by Herbert Baker.

From the same website, an article on the SA National Gallery, Cape Town: http://www.artefacts.co.za/main/Buildings/bldgframes.php?bldgid=3382&archid=258 . (Its own website is http://www.iziko.org.za/sang/ , see also http://wikimapia.org/82491/South-Africa-National-Gallery , but neither is very useful.)

If you need more on JS Cleland please contact me, I'm sure I'd have books about him in the family. Thomas wikipedia@reversebiased.com
