The Market Tavern

The Market Tavern (formerly "The Joiner's Arms") is located in the South Burns area of the historical Market Town of Chester-le-Street, Co Durham in the North East of England, overlooking the town's market place.

Built in the 1840's it was originally part of the town's brewery which stretched the length of the South Burns area and known as Fenwick & Company, supplying all the local public houses. By the middle of the century it was owned by Fenwick & Story.

Abraham Story lived in Hermon House, Front Street and the Fenwick family lived at South Hill in the town.

By 1880 the title had once again become Fenwick & Company. In 1896 the Brewery was sold to George Youngers of Alloa and brewing continued until 1921 with the then Joiner's Arms becoming a public house in its own right.

The Brewery Master's original doorway to the brewery can still be seen today in the neighboring building now used by Ladbrookes with the frontage above the doorway showing 1792.

The town centre is subject to occasional flash flooding, usually after very heavy rain over the town and surrounding areas, if the rain falls too quickly for it to be drained away by Cong Burn. The Market Tavern, has in recent years fallen victim to these floods, once in 1979 and again in 2012.

Another potentially damaging event occurred in 1994 when the adjacent Top Rank Bingo Club (formerly "The Queens" and "Lucky Seven") was gutted by fire but firemen dampened down The Joiner's Arms to avoid the blaze taking hold.
