Countries where English is an official language

I feel an explanation of why I retained Tigray Defence Forces for the title of this article when I started it on 3 May 2021 may be helpful. So, and especially for all the agents (witting or unwitting) of American cultural imperialism, here goes:

  1. I decided that Ethiopia was not a country where English or an English-based creole was the native language of the majority like Scotland or Ambazonia nor a country where English is an official language (but not the majority language) like Sudan or Kenya
  2. I could not discern that the defence forces of Tigray had significant numbers of American advisors or American finance and consequently decided that the topic of the article did not have strong national ties to any particular variety of English - be it American or otherwise
  3. Consequently I decided to retain the existing variety of British English, rather than arbitrarily change to U.S. English [note 1]
