Thomas-Joseph Armand-Calliat, born the 24 of october 1822, in Les Abrets and die in Lyon the 29 november 1901 (79 years old), was a french goldsmith.
Thomas-Joseph Armand married one of the daughters of François Caillat, a Burgundy goldsmith based in Lyon, taking over the business in 1853 with his wife and his sister-in-law and took the name of Armand-Calliat. He abandons the grosserie for religious goldsmithing. Thanks to Armand-Calliat, the house knows a considerable boom: it passes from 12 workers in 1854 to 40 in 1885.
The career of Thomas Joseph Armand-Calliat can be divided into three different type. First, from 1853 to 1858, he is marked by the neogothic art style. Then, when he met Pierre Bossan, the future architect of Fourvière, in 1858, he turns to symbolism. Finally from 1888 to his death in 1901, faithful to the lessons of Bossan and thanks to his collaboration with his son, who joined him in 1891, Armand-Calliat seeks a new art including the use of ivory translucent enamels. The metal is worked without electric turning, welding and stamping machines, the results are very varied pieces of enamels. But the great originality of Armand Caillat's work is its spiritual aim, he wanted to pass a Christian message. The object then becomes centered around faith, with scenes, inscriptions, colors, shapes or even gems.
He is the only goldsmith in Lyon who succeeded in Paris. He refuses the commercial obligations to focus on a manual exercice of his work. However, he does not get rich, and many of his works or his archives were abandoned until 1982. At his death in 1901, he transmits the factory to his son, Joseph, who will sell it in 1924 to Amédée Cateland.
The goldsmith Armand-Calliat was awarded at the London Universal Exhibition in 1862 and those of Paris in 1867, 1878, 1889 and 1900. Also, he published three plates on the occasion of the Universal Exhibitions of 1867, 1878 and 1889. In forty-eight years of career, he creates about 5000 prestigious pieces, mostly for the great French shrines like Lourdes, La Salette or Fourvière, but also for monasteries and especially for the abbey Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. He also created original works for Popes Pius IX and Leo XIII. Today, nearly 1,000 drawings from his studio are kept at the Musée de Fourvière in Lyon.
