William Henry Cling, of Charleston, South Carolina, was an African American Inventor and Artisan who held five patents. Cite error: The <ref> tag has too many names (see the help page). His earliest invention A New and Improved Passenger-Register, was issued a patent by the United States Patent Office on October 13, 1896. His invention was designed to register the number of persons in attendance at a theater or fair. The construction and operation of the apparatus are shown in his drawings.[1]
William Henry Cling was granted his second patent for "The Railway Safety Device" patented on June 27, 1905. His invention was designed for railroad safety to prevent train accidents. Relating particularly to improvements in devices for preventing head-on, or rear end collisions of two trains moving on the same track, Mr. W.H. Cling's invention provided a means for providing the setting of the emergency brake bringing the train to a full stop in sufficient time to prevent an accident. ref>[2][3]
Patent No 813,949 was dated Feb 27, 1906 and was William Henry Cling's patent for "New and Useful Improvements in Shoe Laces." The United States Patent Office issued William Henry Cling Assigner of One-Half regarding Patent No 86109 on July 23, 1097 for his invention especially designed for invalids. He secured his patent Improvements in Hospital Bess For Invalids[4]
William Henry Cling's continued his artistic spirit with his design and invention for the "COAT LAPEL AND COLLAR REGULATOR" was his fourth patent #0831931 issued on September 25, 1906.[5]
