Howard “Chip” Bennett, born 21 December 1958, in Bethpage, Long Island, New York, USA) is a former professional skier, who skied for the Rote Teufel (Red Devils) Schischule, in Kitzbuhel, Austria from 1982 to 1997. He set the world record in endurance skiing in Tignes, France, in April 19-20, 1984, after skiing continuously for 45 hours and 45 minutes. During the competition, the French National Endurance Skiing Championship, he covered 376 miles of downhill distance, and 289,861 vertical feet. What set this particular skiing competition apart from others of the era, was that the competitors were required to ascend the mountain by Poma lift, which effectively meant they were on their feet the whole time. The race course consisted of two side-by-side giant salmon courses; the racers would ski through one for three hours, at which point they would switch to the other course, allowing the initial course to be groomed. The race ended for Bennett when he was discovered on the top of the course, unconscious from exhaustion. The medics on course had trouble finding vitals, so he was rushed hospital, where after receiving intravenous fluids, was released the next day. The results of the race were published in French newspapers, and The New York Times, among others. Ski Magazine featured Bennett in their Top 200, Spring 1986. Personal: Bennett was married to Michelle Bornstein Bennett, 2005-2012. They have twin sons, Daniel and Matthew, born 2009.
