Squid Kid

Squid Kid is a platform game[1] on the Apple App store released on March 10th 2011 and is currently compatible with the iPhone and iPod touch running IOS 3.1 and above.

Plot[edit]

For millions of years the world's oceans were always violent place. For fish and crustaceans alike life in the sea was hard, the strong would prey on the weak and for the cephalopods[2] life was especially tough, many joined the criminals rather than be exploited by them. Due to their changeable body size they were ideal for squeezing through small gaps and were used primarily in robberies.

This turbulent undersea underworld[3] eventually gave rise to vicious criminal gangs, the four most prominent of these gangs carve the undersea territories between them. These four crime lords were known as Mussel Man, Limpet Man, Kung Fu Haddock and Calamity Crab.

After many years of oppression and seemingly no one wishing to get involved one cephalopod did. Not wishing to put his family in danger and wishing to remain anonymous the young squid[4] donned a mask and decided to single handedly take down all four of the main gangs in an attempt to make the sea a safer place. Calling himself Squid Kid he set about saving the sea single handedly.

Gameplay[edit]

In a twist on the traditional platform [1] genre, Squid Kid is controlled by attaching his tentacles to blocks and then dragging him around to begin a pendulous swinging motion. Releasing on the upswing sees Squid Kid release and propel himself to the next closest block. On occasion he can do a swim boost that allows him to fire a jet of ink to propel him away from danger.

Squid Kid must navigate through 20 levels, covering 4 worlds. Each world denoting a lair of a crime boss. After 4 levels Squid Kid faces one of 4 crime bosses who he must defeat buy hitting him with bombs in order to progress to the next crime boss' lair.

Trying to stop Squid Kid is a myriad of henchmen and obstacles. Fire Eels blow up anything that they come into contact with, Ninja Starfish bounce Squid Kid in the other direction, Stone fish turn squid kid to stone and puffa fish bloat Squid Kid to an enormous size making it difficult to navigate the level. There are other hazards for Squid kid to negotiate, such as Toxic Waste, deadly spikes, giant axes, stinging Jelly Fish and even fishermen's hooks.

History[edit]

Taking it's cue from retro platform games [1] such as Super Mario Bros[5] and Mega Man[6] popularised in the 1980s Squid Kid is a 3D animated platform [1] game that takes many of the existing elements of the platform genre such as blocks to jump on and obstacles to navigate giving the twist of swimming through the environment as opposed to running and jumping.
