HMS Impervious was the lead ship of the Impervious class of sixth-rate frigates commissioned into the Royal Navy between 1789 and 1794. The ship was ordered as a result of the French Revolution as the Royal Navy began to grow worried of possible war with France and the destabilization that the Revolution may cause. The ship was rushed into completion, in part due to the wrecking of HMS Serapis off the coast of Barbados. Impervious upon commissioning was considered to handle well and be a fast sailor, however due to the lack of a war she was placed in reserve in Portsmouth until 1793 when she was given a press gang crew and sent to the Mediterranean.
