Background[edit]
The World Bank involvement in Morocco mainly involves funding infrastructure building, such as road, transport and water sanitation system, other focus would be health sector, youth development, renewable energy, government framework and supporting small-medium business(SMEs). There are 27 on-going projects, including 3 new projects on 2017.[1] The World bank group has invested over US$1 Billion every year from 2014 to 2016. [2]
Relation with IFC[edit]
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a component of the World Bank Group, has helped Morocco on building infrastructure in agricultural sector and constructing a public-private partnership (PPP). Bringing Private companies to invest on the rural and urban areas, mainly focus on water supply. They plan on building irrigation plant that can provide 60 to 85 million cubic meters capacity of irrigation in Chtouka area.[3]
New Projects in 2017[edit]
There are 3 new projects approved in 2017.
Financing Innovative Startups and Small and Medium Enterprises Project
It approved on March 10, 2017, which aiming to help seeding the innovative businesses in Morocco. The total project cost would be 50 millions, providing loan and support, such as monitoring and evaluating those companies for six years; it would end in 2023.[4]
Identity and Targeting for Social Protection Project
It is the second active project approved on March 10, 2017, which put 100 million on improving the National Population Register (NPR), and SSN base on social register. Improvement included computer based data for registration, and updating existing information to new data base. Also, establish the procedure for better regulate the registration.[5]
MA-Second Capital Market Development and SME Finance DPL
It is the third project approved on May 16, 2017, that loan out 350 million to the Morocco government, but currently closed. It aims to support the Morocco SME and boost the Morocco economy, in order to promote peace and social stability. It suggested to use on reforming the structure of institution, and increase monitory of the banking sector.[6]
Country Partnership Framework[edit]
In 2014, the Country Partnership Framework (CPF) aim to further improve Morocco’s government to civil, as well as private sector. In order to promote a better business environment, and Building a green and resilient future, lending from IBRD dramatically increase from US$600 million a year to US$1 billion over the past four years.[7]I CPF also focus largely on woman empowerment, involving "EmpowerHer" Hackathon[8], aiming to put women in Morocco in a larger role, and youth voice[9]
