I was thinking about expanding on coral bleaching in Hawaii. There are numerous reasons why bleaching is occuring all over the world and this article doesn't go into too many specifics for the region. Florida is also experiencing this and it has recently been an increasingly alarming issue in the different ecosystems in the oceans. There are also alternatives to sunscreen that are becoming available to prevent the chemical that is causing it.
Expanding on the small town of Otter Rock and the marine reserve located on its beach. This has barely any information on the preserve and scientists have been studying the tide pools and sea life here. It is the smallest marine reserve in Oregon and have been monitoring it since 2010 and put restrictions on harvesting from it in 2012.
Bend Whitewater Park
There are 26 different pneumatic bladders that create the waves at the "Bend Whitewater Park" as well as 3 different channels. There is a different type of "River Surfboard" used and gear to use and not use as well that can be expanded on. There are river surfing organizations that are influencing the sport across the world in different places.

Not the correct climate classification as per there cited reference.)
The Koppen Climate Classification system classifies Otter Rock as having a "dry-summer subtropical" climate which is also referred to as "Mediterranean". The subtype known for this climate is "csb" or "dry-summer subtropical".[2] The average temperature for the year at Otter Rock has been 50.8 degrees Farenheit. Otter Rock Marine Reserve
[edit]Otter Rock Marine Reserve is currently the smallest marine reserve along the Oregon coast. It is approximately 1.2 square miles located from Otter Rock down to Beverly State Beach. Near the north end of the reserve where the town Otter Rock is located are tide pools. You can access these on low tide by hiking down to Devils Punchbowl on the north side as well as the stairs that lead down to the beach on the south side. There is also beach access at Beverly Beach State Park which is located at the south end of the preserve. Monitoring began in 2010 and then harvest restrictions were put in place in 2012. There is a variety of seaweed, mussels, sea stars, fish, seals, sea anemones, octopi, and chitons that live here. Currently scientists from Oregon State University, PISCO, and UC Santa Cruz conduct studies and survey this area on juvenile fish settlement.[4]
Local Activities
[edit]Some of the local activities at Otter Rock include wine tasting, surfing, whale watching, and tide pools.
- Wine tasting- The Flying Dutchman Winery Sits on the bluff right next to Devils Punchbowl and looks down upon Otter Crest Beach. They have 3 different vineyards outside of Jacksonville, Roseburg, and Medford. These locally grown grapes have helped The Flying Dutchman win awards for their Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.[5]
- Surfing- Pura Vida Surf Shop is currently the only surf and skate shop at Otter Rock where they provide surfboard and wetsuit rentals. Surfing lessons are also available. The owner Robert Rube makes custom surfboards and also does ding repair.[6]
- Whale watching- Every year an estimated 20,000 grey whales travel up and down the Oregon coast. Due to the high cliffs and deeper water from Newport to Depoe Bay it has the highest concentration of whale watching locations in Oregon.[7] Otter Rock falls directly in the middle of this. While the whales are present all year long on their migration patterns, the highest concentration comes through in winter where nearly 30 whales pass by an hour. From mid December to mid January (winter migration) they head south to Baja Mexico and then north to Alaska in the spring (late March).[8]
- Tide pools- There is beach access by trails on the south and north side of town. When the tide is low is when the tide pools are accessible on either side. Here it is possible explore all sorts of ocean life such as anemones, starfish, small types of fish, octopi, shellfish, and different types of crabs as well.[9]
- Beachcombing- Beachcombing can be done all year long up and down the Oregon coast. During the winter after the storms shift the sand around turn up the minerals is when is recommended to go. The most popular minerals you will find are Agate, Jasper, Carnelian, Petrified Wood, and Marine Fossils.[10]
