Ki Sun Ham (KeeSun Ham) is the founder and current President of Hanseo University, a private university that specializes in specific subject areas such as aviation. It is located in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea. He was born on the 1st of April 1941 in the city of Yesan, in South Chungcheong province, the eldest of six children born into a farming family.

Educational Background

Dr. Ham received his M.D. and B.S. in Medicine from Korea University in 1965. Two years later he completed an M.S. in Health with the Graduate School of Health at Seoul National University. His Ph.D. in Medicine, with the dissertation ‘Malaria Parasite Life Cycle’, was awarded in 1971, also from Seoul National University.

He was awarded Honorary Doctor of Liberal Arts from Bridgeport University, Connecticut USA, in 1999, Emeritus Professor of Anhui College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China in 2001, Honorary Doctor of Philosophy from Oberlin University, Machida, Japan in 2003, and Honorary Professor of Tashkent Automobile and Construction Institute, Uzbekistan in 2010.

Professional Experience

From 1968 to 1972 he undertook a traineeship in General Surgery at Paik Hospital, Inje University in Gimhae, South Korea. Immediately following this, he undertook his traineeship in Plastic Surgery, at the same hospital, completed in 1974.

From 1974 to 1983 he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Catholic University of Korea. From 1984 to 1999 he conducted a private practice in plastic surgery and was an Adjunct Professor of Plastic Surgery at the Catholic University of Korea.

Awards

In 1978 he was the Korean Medical Association’s ‘Year’s Best Author of Medical Research Articles’ and in 1983 he was awarded the Korean Medical Association’s ‘Culture Prize of Dong-A Medicine’ and the ‘Korean Government Service Medal’. In 2003 he received the Mongolian Government’s ‘Medal of Friendship’ and in 2005 the Korean Government’s ‘National Medal of Seokryujang’.

Korean Red Cross (Republic of Korean National Red Cross)

From 1975 to 1986 he performed approximately 2000 cleft palate surgeries at no cost for disadvantaged children in conjunction with the Korean Red Cross (KRC). From 1987 to 1996 he was a committee member of the Standing Committee of the Seoul Chapter of the KRC, a member of the Communication Advisory Committee of the South-North National Red Cross from 1989 to 1993, Vice President of the Seoul Chapter of the KRC from 1998 to 2001 and Vice President of the KRC from 2006 to 2008. He has been the Chairman of the KRC Youth Advisory Committee since 2002 and a member of the KRC Central Committee since 2001.

Each year, approximately 20 scholarships are granted to Youth Red Cross members (usually high school graduates) who are mainly from Asian, African, and South American countries. These scholarships are awarded based on the recommendations of the presidents of Red Cross organizations in the related countries are allowed the opportunity for these students to undertake a university education at HanSeo University. Dr. Ham was awarded the Silver Medal by the KRC in 1980, the Red Cross Gold Order of Merit in 2008 and, in 2011, he received the prestigious Henry P Davison Award from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent.

Other Professional Activities and Associations

Secretary-General of the International Association of Melody Therapy (1979 to 1982) and a Board member of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (1980 to 1992). He founded the Korean Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and served as the Chairman of its Academic Committee (1980 to 1992).

Publications

He has published in excess of 100 medical journal articles and 10 medical textbooks on plastic and cosmetic surgery, including ‘Cleft Lip and Palate’ (1982) and ‘Aesthetic Contouring of the Craniofacial Skeleton’ (1991), general human anatomy and neuroanatomy (e.g., Clinical Neuroanatomy – 1995). He is also a poet with 7 collections of his poetries published including ‘Love Songs of Gaya Mountain’ (2001) and ‘Kee-Sun Ham’s Poetry: 77 Songs’ (2009).

HanSeo University

In the mid 1980s, inspired by a mentor and with a strong interest in the Arts and Health Sciences, Dr. Ham began to plan for the establishment of his own private university. He chose the Jamiwon region in Haemi county, where HanSeo University is located, because of a local legend that the ‘King of the World’ would come from this area as it is believed that very strong Chi is found there.

HanSeo University’s founding steering committee was established on January 15, 1989, with an application to establish the university submitted to the Korean Ministry of Education in June of that year and permission granted on October 28th. The ground-breaking ceremony was held on April 11th, 1990, and the University opened its doors to its first students in March 1992 with enrolments into undergraduate programs across ten departments (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Electronic Statistics, Computer and Information, Electronic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Clothing and Textiles, English and English Literature, and Chinese). In 1995, masters’ programs were offered for the first time in five disciplines (Chemistry, Computer, Physics, Chemical Engineering, and English and English Literature). The University produced its first graduates in 1996 with 207 individuals successfully completing their studies. In early 2000, Dr. Ham was inaugurated as its fifth president. He determined that the university should adopt a new direction that focused on a few specialized disciplines including Aeronautics, and Arts and Design. In 2001, the University established the Long Beach Flight Academy in California, USA. The following year, an Aviation Support Center was established on home soil, and in 2003 a ground-breaking ceremony was held for a new campus, for the Aeronautics and Marine Sciences disciplines. The site chosen is located near TaeAn on the West Coast approximately 40 minutes drive from the main Jamiwon campus. By July 2003, an Air Traffic Control Centre, certified by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, was established on the new campus. In 2004 an Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Course) program was launched. By 2005, the College of Aeronautics and Astronautics had established five academic departments: Aeronautical Engineering, Airline Operations, Air Traffic Management, Aeronautical Tourism, and Avionics Simulation. Today the University has approximately 7500 undergraduate and graduate students across 6 divisions with about 1500 new enrolments each year. It employs over 650 full-time staff and many more part-time and casual employees.
