Lucas Alan Dietsche is an Editor of Poetry Behind the Walls. Dietsche is currently pursuing his Masters in Criminology/Criminal Justice in University of Wisconsin-Platteville. His Master's Thesis is on "Poetic Justice" to use poetry for healing, dissuasion, and help trauma-affected system-involved youth. Currently living in Superior, Wisconsin he is a self-taught poet he published works such as “Word Out”, “Elba”, “Commies and Zombies”, “Since the Oregon Trail”,“Moods are Like Wisconsin Weather”,and “Kapshida.” He has published poetry in Transformative Justice Journal, Ariel Anthology, and Nemadji Review. He has a blog called "Xennial Poetry Notes. He is Superior's first Co-Poet Laureate in 2019. Dietsche is the Regional Coordinator with Midwest Save the Kids, Formerly Incarcerated Peers, and organizer of Letters to Prisoners group. I have a unique experience growing up that has given a lot of background to give my poetry an interesting flavor. I was born in 1981 to Jodi and Stan Dietsche in Appleton, Wisconsin. For most of my life, I have lived in rural Fond du lac, Wisconsin. Being the oldest of two younger brothers, I have always written, created, and been interested in the arts. I have been fascinated by science and history. I used to Civil War Reenactments for 8 years and in various historical societies. I was an extra in the 2004 movie “Gods and General”. Growing up, my taste for poetry has always changed, but I stick to mainly classics. I have been heavily influenced by imagism, Dada, surrealism, mysticism, expressionism, Soviet realism, free verse, Russian, British, and American modernism. My literary heroes are Mina Loy, Sylvia Plath, Edger Allan Poe, Kahil Gibrain, Rumi, Emily Dickenson, e.e. cummings, Audre Lorde, Anna Akhmatova, Sergei Essenin, Ann Sexton, Hugo Ball, h.d, Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha Vladimir Makovsky, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, Lewis Carrol, Dr. Suess, to name a few. I believe that poets should read all the time, keep a journal, and find their own voice.
I take great pride in coming from a non-orthodox English literature background. I have been heavily interested in history, sociology, and criminology. I only took what writing and English classes I needed for my Bachelors. In 2003, I took a British literature class which forever sent me on a timeline as a poet. Since then, my methodology and context of poetry has changed. I consider myself a self-taught poet and for most of the time being insular from other poets. Suffering from decades from depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and Schizotypal Personality Disorder, I write very descriptive, poignant, and real poems using different rhyme schemes. I write on weather, geography, capitalism, love, mental illness, being a Xennial, Scorpio, and death. I have a great wealth of experiences to continuously draw upon poems on. I published seven books that are either novellas or poetry genres. I continue to post on a blog called “Xennial Poetry Notes” and publish poetry on a Facebook page and monthly a “Poetry Planet”.
I received by degree in History and Sociology and always thought of myself as a poet first. I am in the middle of finishing my graduate degree in Criminal Justice. I wish to create a genre of criminology called “Poetic Criminology” looking at literature, zines, poetry of incarcerated persons within a literature and criminological context. I aspire to continue research and write in the academic field and at some point, attaining a Phd. I already go to national conferences to give presentations on criminology. My variety of job opportunities have been eclectic and vast. I have worked at cheese factories, picked blue berries, worked as a lab technician, worked at grocery stores, and cleaned office spaces. I am very much the epitome of the Xennial working-class poet, and I believe this is a great fit for a Superior Poet Laureate.
