Doppler Shift (or, What Gets My Goat)

I am here to root out a common fallacy. The redshift of far-away light due to the expansion of space, which implies the Big Bang, is not a Doppler shift. It's similar in effect, but the cause and math are very different. Unfortunately, it is often misrepresented in print, probably due to over-casual usage, and the misstatement is perpetuated on Wikki as well. Even the page devoted to it (Hubble's law) gets it wrong. While you can derive a redshift simply from considerations of comoving distance equations, there is also a very real way in which the effect is related to the Doppler effect and the relativistic Doppler effect. Joshuaschroeder 30 June 2005 16:44 (UTC)
