Born at Walton Hospital 27 June 1956. Attended Our Lady of WalsinghaM junior school in Netherton. Father was a school teacher. Attended St. Edwards College in West Derby from 1963 to 1968 and then Salesian College Grammer in Bootle from 1968 to 1972. His first job was Ministry of Defence Civil Service in Liverpool and then ran Hot Wax Record Shop in the city. After its closure he trevelled to Paris and lived there for a year busking. Returned to England and performed in Merseyside area folk clubs and worked as a singer/songwriter. Commenced
