GEOL 4066: Plate Tectonics: WIKIPEDIA START-UP HOMEWORK

(1)

[A] provide the link to the page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tian_Shan

[B] explain the basic concept and value of the page (one sentence per page): It gives a (mostly geographic) over view of the Tian Shan mountain system and its ranges.

[C] propose a useful alteration / addition to the page’s content: I would propose the addition of a geology, climate, and an economic resources section.

[D] describe both a successful part and an improve-able part of the *written communication* of the page: A (relatively) successful part of the written communication of this article is the "Geographic" section because its detailed enough to orient the reader without a map. The "Ecology" section is not well developed and can use a lot more information. The "Chinese Religion" section is not only poorly developed, but seems out of place in this article.

[E] describe both a successful part and an improve-able part of the *visual communication* on the page: The regional map of the Tian Shan is useful in orienting the reader. And the map outlining Kyrgyzstan is effective in showing the elevation distribution throughout the Tian Shan. However, a more detailed map, labeling the ranges mentioned, would better fit the "Ranges of the Tian Shan" section.

[A] provide the link to the page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geology_of_the_Himalaya

[B] explain the basic concept and value of the page (one sentence per page): This article provides a general geologic overview of the growth of the the Himalaya. This article touches on the basic principles of the development of the Himalaya and reviews the major tectonic subdivisions.

[C] propose a useful alteration / addition to the page’s content: I would add information regarding the observation of non-plate tectonic deformation in the Himalaya and it's significance.

[D] describe both a successful part and an improve-able part of the *written communication* of the page: The breakdown of the tectonic subdivisions is a successful part of the written communication of the page because it provides a simple overview of the tectonic subdivisions of the Himalaya. However, the mechanisms of deformation since collision are not well developed.

[E] describe both a successful part and an improve-able part of the *visual communication* on the page: Figures 5 and 6 are effective in clearly displaying the tectonic subdivisions discussed in the article. The page can be improved if figures of models for deformation mechanisms after collision are added.

[A] provide the link to the page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrust_tectonics

[B] explain the basic concept and value of the page (one sentence per page): This page provides the basic definitions of thrust deformation styles and a brief description of the geological environments associated with thrust tectonics.

[C] propose a useful alteration / addition to the page’s content: The addition of figures of cross sections of different thrust geometries.

[D] describe both a successful part and an improve-able part of the *written communication* of the page: The page is useful in that it provides general definitions in thrust tectonics but a lot of information is missing.

[E] describe both a successful part and an improve-able part of the *visual communication* on the page: The page is visually unsuccessful. There are no figures at all. It would be very effective to incorporate figures displaying thrust tectonics.

[A] an outline of the topic My Wikipedia article will discuss the tectonic setting and evolution of the Tian Shan.

[B] discussion of its value to both the wide audience and specialist audience: Coalescing the observations and conclusions in the literature will be a major contribution to the existing collection of articles pertaining to collisional Indo-Eurasian tectonics. To the general audience, this article will provide an overview of the growth of the Tian Shan. To a specialist audience, this article will provide a geologic background and tectonic reference frame for future research of geologic problems in the Tian Shan.

[C] an explanation of how you intend to structure the page: I plan to structure the page into the following categories/sections: 1) General Tectonic Setting, 2) Thrust Systems, 3) GPS Velocity Field, 4) Relationship between Uplift, Denudation and Crustal Shortening, and 5) Economic Resources. I will use a reference regional map of the Indo-Asian collisional system. My original figure will be a map view of the thrust systems in the Tian Shan.
