Evaluating scores from the Big Five Inventory against the EBA rubric for norms and reliability
Criterion Rating Explanation with references
Norms Adequate Research studies had convenience samples from different populations with large sample sizes. Most had nonclinical samples.
Internal consistency Good Cronbach's alphas for the subscales of the BFI averaged above .80. The range is from .75 to .90.
Inter-rater reliability Not applicable Inter-rater reliability is not applicable for the BFI, as it is a self-report scale.
Test-retest reliability (stability) Good Correlations ranged from .80 - .90 for a three month test-retest.
Repeatability Not published Studies have not been conducted to assess repeatability.

Validity

[edit]
Evaluation of validity and utility for the General Behavior Inventory (table from Youngstrom et al., unpublished, extended from Hunsley & Mash, 2008; *indicates new construct or category)
Criterion Rating Explanation with references
Content validity Good Researchers determined that the BFI is a well-design tool that effectively measures the Big Five Personality traits. The subscales had good factor structure and intercorrelations between scales were generally low (.04 to .24).
Construct validity (e.g., predictive, concurrent, convergent, and discriminant validity) Adequate The BFI shows convergent validity with other big five measurements and peer ratings. Convergent correlations of .67 for extraversion, .60 for openness, .52 for neuroticism, .48 for agreeableness, .47 for conscientiousness. In another study, an analysis of the convergence of the BFI factor across different age groups indicated that the factor structure was stable across phases of the life span. Other studies found convergent correlations at around .70 on average for the subscales. Construct reliabilities ranged from .65 to .81 on BFI factors.
Discriminative validity Adequate Studies found that discriminant correlations were low (r = .20) overall for the BFI. Other studies supported that the BFI had moderate discriminant validity.
Validity generalization Good Although used mostly as a self report. Studies have shown that it can be administered to different populations, as it is used in samples that consisted of mostly college students and other adults of different backgrounds. Moreover, it has been translated to different languages and have been shortened to as few as 5 items. These different versions of the BFI also has good reliability and validity.
Treatment sensitivity Not applicable Studies have not yet been conducted to address treatment sensitivity.
Clinical utility Good It can be publicly accessed by any individual. Strong scores of reliability and validity shows that it can be used in different settings, either clinical or non clinical. There have been numerous studies supporting the BFI.
