Grim Oak Press is an American small press publisher of science fiction and fantasy in Battle Ground, Washington. It was founded by author Shawn Speakman in 2012.

History

[edit]

Shawn Speakman, webmaster and freelance author, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2011. He founded Grim Oak Press as an effort to alleviate a $200,000 financial debt from the recommended chemotherapy.[1] It first published Speakman's novel, The Dark Thorn in November 2012.[2] As suggested by Shannara author Terry Brooks, Speakman reached out to nearly two dozen authors who contributed short stories and published the Unfettered anthology in June 2013.[1][3][4]

A non-profit charity, Grim Oak Shield, was launched in 2016 to help in eliminating the medical debt of authors and artists.[5][6] Grim Oak Press donated 5% of its profits from the sale of the 35th anniversary editions of Megan Lindholm's novel, Wizard of the Pigeons, to the National Veterans Foundation.[7]

In 2018, Ingram Publisher Services announced the addition of Grim Oak Press to its distribution network.[8]

In December 2021, Grim Oak Press partnered with author Patrick Rothfuss to create a new imprint called Underthing Press. The new imprint's first project would be a reprint of Ursula Vernon's webcomic Digger, which won the Hugo Award in 2012.[9]

Authors

[edit]

Grim Oak Press has published exclusive and limited, lettered and trade editions of works by authors such as Jacqueline Carey, Mark Lawrence, Naomi Novik, Terry Brooks, Peter Orullian, Brandon Sanderson, and Jim Butcher, among others.[5][10]
