Lucie & Simon
Lucie et Simon

Biography[edit]

Lucie de Barbuat (French, b. 1981) and Simon Brodbeck (German, b. 1986, son of photographer Peter Lindbergh), have been working together in New York and Paris since 2005 as Lucie & Simon.

Influences[edit]

Often using modern technological means such as montages, 3D computer creation, or mixing photographic and video techniques, Lucie & Simon's work consists of strong visual set-ups, often playing on the frontier between "reality and unreal" and inspired by Romantic painters such as Caspar David Friedrich, Antoine-Jean Gros or Théodore Géricault, but also science-fiction and German Expressionism.

Recent Work[edit]

‘’Silent World’’, is comprised of 40 photographs. Taken between 2009 and 2012, Lucie & Simon chose to highlight symbolic and typically crowded international locations in China, USA, France and Italy — but strikingly devoid of human presence.

The project is rounded out by 3 videos, each 0’59’’, and a 7 minute film with music by Philip Glass and Daft Punk, 2012. This work will be exhibited soon at Rencontres d’Arles in 2012, and in their upcoming solo exhibition at FoMu, Fotomuseum Antwerp, Belgium.

In ‘’Scenes of Life’’ Lucie & Simon inspire us to reconsider everyday scenes by asking us to look down from above on the aftermath of picnics, fishing in the pond, or resting after birth on the maternity ward. It’s provocative perspective, like mirrors on the ceiling of everyday life, reflecting on our selves.
