Ione Taylor is an American geoscientist who currently holds a position as an adjunct professor and the executive director of the Earth and Energy Resources Leadership at Queen’s University at Kingston. Her areas of professional interest are energy and natural resource management, applied petroleum geology, applied physical sciences, among others (Faculty | Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering. Dr. Taylor is the current leader of the Guilford College Board of Trustees, she is the first woman in Guilford history to chair this board. She resides in Southern Virginia on a farm with her Husband Al, she also has an adult son and daughter.[1]

Dr. Taylor received both a Master of Science degree and Phd in Geology/Geochemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry at Guilford College. Additionally, she holds an executive Certificate in strategy and innovation from Sloan School of Management at MIT, and is a graduate of Thunderbird School of Global Management.[2][3]

Career[edit]

Ione Taylor embarked on her professional career drilling wells as a petroleum geologist in the Gulf of Mexico. Over the course of 15 years she held several positions at Amoco Production Co, and British Petroleum before transitioning to a career in research and the development of international projects. She moved up to senior leadership positions, serving as R&D Director of Worldwide Technology Applications, Vice President of Overseas Exploration, and Upstream Technology Group Lead for Worldwide Reservoir Description. Thereafter she joined the United States Geological Survey.  


Dr. Taylor has demonstrated great commitment and support for the principles and values of the U.S. Geological Survey, her dedication was awarded in 2003 when she was the recipient of an excellence in leadership award.[4] She is currently the Associate Director in matters concerning Energy Minerals and Environmental health and focuses on energy and mineral resource security, interdisciplinary environmental science, and the application of satellite remote sensing for earth observation for the USGS. Most recently in the USGS she served as the Senior Executive who oversaw geological research and assessment programs for energy and mineral resources and economics to advise natural resource management, in addition to toxic and contaminant substances that impact human and environmental health.[5][6]


She also serves as a board and panel member of the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) and served as an expert on the panel of state knowledge and practice of integrated approaches to natural resource management in Canada. In April 2019 she contributed to the creation of the “Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts: Toward Integrated Natural Resource Management in Canada”[7][8]
