The word is sacred in all religions:

                        C.P. Rajasekharan

The concept of ‘Vaagdevatha,’ which is worshipped by Indians in its different incarnations such as ‘Durga,’ ‘Kali,’ Mother, Nature and Power, is only the concept of ‘The word’ which is sacred and sanctified in different faiths across the world, C.P. Rajasekharan, writer has said. He was delivering a talk on ‘Secularism and the Indian concept of goddess of words,’ jointly organised by the Creative Council of Indian Writers and the Chavara Cultural Centre in connection with the Vijayadashami celebrations at the Chavara Hall in the city on Monday. Stating that the Indian concept in that sense is a universal concept, Dr. Rajasekharan said that ‘Saraswathy’ was the goddess of words and hence was not pertaining to any particular religion. “Worshipping the word means to be deeply aware of our common beginning, and it is a spiritual journey that takes one closer to truth,” he said. Dr. Rajasekharan said that any sensitive and thinking person should worship words. He said that the root cause of all the problems faced by the present world is man’s negligence and irreverence towards words. He said that it was with one’s words that a person attracted or repelled the world. “Worshipping the word will only take one closer to truth, which is otherwise called God,” he said. Historian M.G.S. Narayanan, who presided over the function, said that people who practised different faiths were not aware of the commonalities owing to their parochial attitude. While materialism and spirituality were conflicting concepts in Western philosophy they were not so in the Indian Philosophy, said Dr. Narayanan. He said the concept of secularism was defined constructively in the Indian context. “It doesn’t negate God or religion; instead it allows the peaceful coexistence of diverse thoughts and search for truth,” he said. An all-religion prayer song was presented at the venue. Chavara Cultural Centre Director Fr. Jose Idappadi welcomed the gathering. A public discussion was also part of the programme. - Staff Reporter Vaagdevatha, C.P. Published Date: 08 Feb, 2007 (6:34 PM) MANGALORE Feb 9: The radio will soon cackle. Listeners in City from September onwards will have a range of options and can choose from private FM stations like KAL Radio, Adlabs Films, Enil, Century Comm-or the ever reliable Mangalore AIR. With the arrival of Cable Transmitting Systems (CTS), work has begun on providing co-location and co-transmitting facilities for the four private FM players at Mangalore AIR premises. Under a Common Transmission Infrastructure agreement signed between private FM stations and Prasar Bharati, Mangalore AIR will share its infrastructure with FM players-for a fat fee, says AIR Station Director C P Rajasekharan. Members of Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), who were formerly with AIR, are expected to complete the task of providing tower aperture, cover space, antennae cable among others by end of March. The private FMs who have partially paid the money committed during the successful bidding will go on air any time from April depending on their ability to pool resources and marshall talents to anchor shows. "The programmes of private FM stations transmitted from three kilo watt transmission tower will cover a radius of eight kilometres," informs Rajasekharan and adds; "It may extend even uptown 50 kms due to climatic advantages." The entry of private FMs will influence Mangalore's taste for music, which is still conventional, says Hashish Rai who anchored the popular hip-hop (an English listener request programme) on Mangalore AIR.A student of Manipal Institute of Communication (MICR) in Manipal, Rai says there will be a huge demand for disc-jockeys and people of all ages will take up radio-jockey as a part-time or full-time job. C P Rajasekharan is not unduly worried on the intense competition from private FMs and doomed predictions. In fact there will be competition within ourselves to make better programmes, he emphasised confidently. So in September prepare to be wooed. New Ind Press

Freedom of Speech: Communist Version

By Jayakrishnan Nair on February 10, 2006 in India You know how much the Communists are for freedom of speech. So long as you are not searching for Tibet or Falun Gong, you are free to use Google in China. Their brothers in Kerala too love freedom of speech and they show their affection by pouring oil on people. Recently the Director of All India Radio (Kozhikode) made some remarks against V.S.Achyutanandan, the head honcho of the Kerala Communists and it did not go well with the monkey brigade called DYFI. Black oil was poured on C.P. Rajasekharan, Director of All India Radio (AIR), Kozhikode, as he came out from the Town Hall in Vatakara in the district on Thursday. A group of persons, said to be Democratic Youth Federation of India workers, shouted slogans against Mr. Rajasekharan after pouring the oil. [AIR Director comes under attack] Women all around the world are fighting for equal rights as men. The Communists are all for that too. Oil was poured on Leela Abhilash who had the audacity to – and hold your breath here – to contest an election in a democratic India. - See more at: http://varnam.nationalinterest.in/2006/02/freedom_of_speech_communist_ve/#sthash.v4IeB4YR.dpuf

Timely tribute to Uroob

MALEEHA RAGHAVIAH

`Uroob: Kalamthanneyanu' attempts to cover the entire gamut of works and characters of Uroob's novels and more.

Quiet flows the Kallayi: Transforming Uroob's novels on celluloid. "What I have sought to depict is the inherent element of timelessness in Uroob's novels - like Ponnani or Kallayi rivers. It portrays the deep sensitivity of the author and the vibrancy of his novels. Of ordinary souls immortalised, the element of poetry in the flowing of a river or the fragrance of the pepper vine," says C.P. Rajasekharan, the director of `Uroob: Kalamthanneyanu,' on writer Uroob alias P.C. Kuttikrishnan. "I knew Uroob personally. I felt it was my duty to make a film on him. Many a time he was the producer, and I the director. This documentary is a continuation of that association," he adds. Rajasekharan, who is the Director, All India Radio, Kozhikode, says Uroob's son, Sudhakaran, who resembles his father, seemed the right choice to enact the role. M.T. Vasudevan Nair, litterateur, who switched on the camera for the docu-film,and others who knew Uroob well, were surprised at the similarity between the father and son - not just the looks, but the mannerisms as well. Initially, Sudhakaran was sceptical. But once he got into the mode, he carried on in the most informal manner. "Before I started shooting the film, I visited Ponnani and interacted with some of the characters, who are still around. I read Uroob's works. This docu-film is a recreation of his works, personality and experiences," says Rajasekharan. By juxtaposing imageries of the familiar scenes in Uroob's novels with the characters who dominated his stories, Rajasekharan has woven a tapestry that appeals to the heart and strikes a chord with the viewers. Jayan Chembazhanthi handles the camera. Characters of `Ummachu' Except for the opening scene, what follows is fiction. There are fleeting depictions of `Ummachu,' a name that conjures up pictures of the woman who has been immortalised by Uroob, and the profusely read novel by the same name. "Possibly, Uroob met the character in `Ummachu' during one of his visits to Ponnani court," adds Rajasekharan. The documentary portrays the extraordinary beauty and inner strength that Uroob recognised in ordinary people; his reflections on Malabar during the Second World War and after, and the communal harmony in the social milieu. The bond between Edassery Govindan Nair and Uroob forms the basis of many episodes. Amminiattathi, the empowered woman, glimpses of Hassanar, Chakkunni Nair and Nalini, all immortalised by Uroob, find place in the documentary. Uroob's school in Ponnani, and his ambition to be a postman are not forgotten. One gets glimpses of the Kuttipuram and the Kallayi bridges, which had much symbolism for Uroob, Radha Theatre at Sweet Meat Bazaar, which was the rendezvous of writers in Kozhikode, including S.K. Pottekkat. Experienced director Rajasekharan has made docu-fictions on Vishu, Easter and the Cochin Shipyard. He won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award for Best Malayalam play in 1987, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award for total contribution to theatre in 1991, Doordarshan award for best scripting and production and Akashavani national awards several times for scripts and productionThe 50th anniversary of Uroob's novel `Ummachu' had invoked memories of the noted novelist's characters in a hundred ways, and this docu-film is a walk down memory lane, and a tribute to the popular writer.

Mangalore to get 4 pvt FM channels soon

Last Updated on Sunday, 15 April 2007 00:00 Sunday, 15 April 2007 00:00 Searching for some fresh enticing voice on your radio, after feeling monotonous of the usual news or analysis of current affairs? Not much days are remaining to end your anticipation.

People in and around the City, coming under about 20 km radius, can soon tune into the entertaining private FM channels, not one but four in all.

Yes, get ready to welcome the bonanza that will hit the City within a month or two. This time, you will listen to the voices, which will be very much of your own, functioning from your own district headquarters.

Kal Radio (The Sun Group), Adlabs Films, ENIL (Radio Mirchi) and Century Communications, who have won the bids from Prasar Bharahi almost a year ago, are now gearing up to launch their channels in the City. The process of installing transmitters in the premises of AIR Mangalore at Kadri is in progress, which is expected to be finished by the end of April.

Some of the companies have already started recruiting and training radio jockeys (RJs), who are simultaneously conducting surveys in and around the city, in order to get a clear picture of the kind of the listenership they are going to get.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, AIR Mangalore Station Director C P Rajasekharan said the private FM channels would function from the Akashvani premises itself, where the All India Radio would provide basic facilities like space and towers.

“Broadcast Engineering Society of India (BESI) has been providing engineering assistance to the private companies in installing the towers. The works have been started in February itself, which will be completed by the end of this month. It is left to the companies to decide the day of launching their programmes,” he explained.

Mr Rajasekharan said private participation was the need for the day for a healthy competition and quality enhancement.

This will not at all be an obstacle for the survival of AIR. Many of our dynamic youth are going to get admiring jobs if they are workaholic. This would start another phase in communication revolution, he observed.

Will the ‘FM culture’ attract Mangaloreans; Will the private stake holders be successful in catching up the pulse of the coastal belt; Will they reap plenty out of their primary deposit... are the present questions before the public.

TOWARDS PRIVATISATION

The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) permitted to start 338 new FM stations across 91 cities in the country last year, which came under 5 categories, namely A+, A, B, C and D. Cities like New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata fall under the A+ category, while those like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Jaipur fall under A category. Mangalore falls under the ‘C’ category. It was a milestone decision of the Union government on the path of privatising and popularising the broadcasting sector.
