Destar Limited was founded by ex-Vodafone Messaging and Voicemail expert Glenn de Smidt in July 2000. The original goal of the company was to provide consultancy services for a new breed of SMS aggregation company which were starting in the UK and Europe. Through its consultancy work Destar Limited took a 40% stake in a small text messaging aggregator in 2001 called Quartez Limited. Quartez serviced the publishing and media industries. Destar Limited sold its stake in Quartez Limited to Trinity Mirror plc in 2004 for an undisclosed sum.
Destar Limited sells a variety of products targeted at the digital media industry. Its premier product is MobileTranscode, a sophisticated encoding engine designed to encode image, audio and video for mobile devices.
