Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard is located in Dundee, New York, and was founded in 1979. It includes a nursery, vineyards, winery and wine-tasting rooms.
History
[edit]The vineyard's history goes back to 1973 when Hermann J. Wiemer bought 150 acres of land that included an abandoned soybean farm, a farmhouse from 1790, and a barn from 1923.[1] Wiemer started a nursery specializing in Vitis vinifera cuttings grafted onto American grape rootstock. He successfully planted his first vineyard of Riesling and Chardonnay in 1977 and produced his first wine in 1979, thus establishing the winery. He submitted his first two wines to the New York State Fair[2] and they both won prizes.
On Christmas Day, 1980, Wiemer's vineyards were hit by a sudden freeze that killed 100 percent of the buds on the winery's riesling and chardonnay vines.
