Cristofano dell'Altissimo, posthumous portrait of Contessina de' Bardi

Lotta "Contessina" de' Bardi (c. 1392 – 1473) ...

Early life[edit]

Born around 1392, Lotta de' Bardi was the daughter of Alessandro di Sozzo Bardi, count of Vernio, and Cammilla Pannocchieschi. She was raised in Oltrarno, a neighborhood of Florence.[1] At the time, the Bardi family was a powerful noble family in Florence.[2] Although the Bardi bank failed in the mid-14th century when its debtors failed to repay their loans, the family retained its influence as a result of its noble status.[3]

Contessina married Cosimo de' Medici around 1415.[1] The marriage was strategic, designed to merge the nobility of the Bardi family with the wealth of the Medicis.[3]
