Moto Club de São Luís, or Moto Club, as they are usually called, is a professional Brazilian football team from São Luís in Maranhão, founded on September 13, 1937.

History[edit]

In 1939 the Santa Isabel Stadium was inaugurated, in homage to the industrial factory César Aboud. As the only team in the state with its own stadium, it won 7 consecutive state titles from 1944 to 1950, still remembered today by the fans of the time, and are the only team ever to achieve this feat in the state championship. However, in 1972 the stadium was demolished and in its place the building of the Ministry of Finance in São Luís was erected.

Moto Club is one of the most successful state champions in Maranhão, having won 28 titles.

Recent Seasons[edit]

In 2020, Moto Club, in an unprecedented move, hired 20 year old Australian manager Daniel Turner to lead the team. Turner signed a large amount of new players for the upcoming Campeonato Maranhense and Série C seasons, and made a complete overhaul of the coaching staff. The changes proved to work, with the club topping the first stage of the Campeonato Maranhense, and going on the win the competition against bitter rivals Sampaio Corrêa, winning as the higher seed after a 3-3 draw over two legs. The club then had a very successful season in the Série C, winning their group with a record points total under the current format. They went on to win promotion to the Série B and actually win the competition by winning the playoffs.

In 2021, Moto Club participated participated in the Copa do Nordeste, and the Copa do Brasil, in addition to the Campeonato Maranhense and the Série B. Daniel Turner once again replaced many of the players from the previous season, although not quite to the same extent as when he first took over the club. They retained their state title, topping the first stage of the competition again and winning the championship playoff as the higher seed after a 2-2 aggregate draw over two legs, against rivals Maranhão. They lost in the semi finals of the Copa do Nordeste against Santa Cruz on away goals after a 3-3 draw over two legs. They lost in the first round of the Copa do Brasil against Goiás, 1-0. In the Série B, the side had an unexpectedly strong season, winning the league comfortably, setting the record for the most points in a season and the most wins in a season in the Série B. This granted them promotion to the Série A for the following season.

Stadium[edit]

The club's home matches are played at the Castelão stadium, which has a maximum capacity of 40,000 people.

Rivalries[edit]

Moto Club's fiercest rival is Sampaio Corrêa, with whom they share their home stadium. They also have a local rivalry with Maranhão.
