Big Cartel is a US-based company that builds software to help artists sell their work online[1]. The company was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in Salt Lake City, UT. In 2018, the company was named to the Forbes Small Giants list of America’s Best Small Companies[2].

History[edit]

Big Cartel was founded by Matt Wigham and Eric Turner in 2005 as a way to sell band merchandise online[3]. As a musician and web developer, Wigham originally wanted to create a way to sell his own band's merch online. Turner, an experienced web designer, soon joined him and together they set out to create an easier and more affordable way for all bands and record labels to sell their work online.[4].

Since 2005, the platform has expanded to support all types of creators, and has enabled up-and-coming bands, fashion designers, jewelers, record labels and other sellers to create their own custom online shop and sell their work[5][6]. By 2018, the platform had facilitated over $2.5 billion in sales to artists and was named in Forbes list of America's Best Small Companies[7].

Platform[edit]

Big Cartel offers four pricing packages that range from free to $29.99 per month. Sellers are responsible for packaging and shipping each item sold. Big Cartel does not charge any listing or transaction fees, and there are no contracts-all accounts operate on a month-to-month basis[8].
