The CWE, or Cartoon Wrestling Entertainment, is a fanfiction created by Wikicontributer Darkpower. It is a crossover of Wrold Wrestling Entertainment and several Japanese anime. Even though the series has as down times (called "Hiatuses"), the series is set as having historical roots far beyond what was written.

History and format

[edit]

In 1999, Darkpower had began the script-format Cartoon Wresting Federation, a crossover of WWE and many Anime shows, Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z being among them. The crossover had been one of the longest running fanfiction series of all time, with the series having an "on/off again" schedule. The CWF became the CWE, or Cartoon Wrestling Entertainment, to coincide with the WWE's name change in 2002.

The series focused on the characters from the focused on anime competing in a WWE ring with WWE wrestlers such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker, and more recently John Cena and Triple H. Some Anime characters used were not very popular or used widely in the anime that the characters originated, such as Sailor Moon villain Queen Beryl becoming a title holder and Trigun villain Dominique, who was only featured in one episode of that Anime series, was featured in more than one episode. Each Anime star that had debuted has generally remained in the CWE spotlight far beyond their originate series' lifespan or popularity. For instance, even though the Pokemon anime series has wained in popularity in recent years, many of its characters have remained in the CWE to this day. Also, the CWE took on WWE show names, such as RAW, SmackDown, and WrestleMania, and took place in a WWE ring and real arenas.

The CWE had followed WWE storylines (or angles) while creating their own. In addition, a rule in the CWE is that Anime characters did not have to remain in character once introduced. This in turn opened the door for many characters to turn on others that they wouldn't normally turn on, and befriend otherwise mortal enemies. Anime characters turned face (good) and heel (bad) just as easily as the WWE wrestlers. This, in turn, also let the Anime stars have storied CWE histories that rivaled their counterpart anime storylines. It was also commonplace to see intergender matches, and to see female Anime wrestlers hold main event positions on cards and are considered equals.

Controversy

[edit]

The CWE had its own share of controversies, some bigger than others.

A 1999 match between Queen Beryl and Stone Cold Steve Austin left sour tastes in the mouths of a few fans when Beryl became the "first champion" (the CWE was later given a "fake" history that would make it date back to the early 80's, thereby neglecting such a title).

Another controversy stemmed from the CWE No Mercy 1999 "pay-per-view", in which a six pack match featuring The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Queen Beryl (the title holder at that point), Triple H, Goku, and The Undertaker took place for the CWE Championship. In the weeks prior to the event, a storyline developed between Darkpower's in ring character and Beryl, with a romantic connection developing between the two. This made Triple H angry in the storyline because of possibility of favoritism for the champion. However, at the end of the match, it is revealed to be a set up to make Triple H the champion by attacking Beryl and helping Triple H to be able to pin her without any interference from the other participants. The controversy stemmed from some of the comments that were made afterwards, taking shots at her appearance and that sexual intercourse was the only reason for his continuing to go along with it. Many felt that the type of comments used in the storyline to describe what DP really felt about Beryl after the match was overboard, and was too much in common to how some real life relationships can turn out, and the abusive comments afterwards equally over the top. The storyline continued for a few weeks afterwards with Beryl chasing after DP's fake love before finally realizing her errors and confronted him to tell him that she was no longer heartbroken for him. To end out the Triple H and Darkpower alliance, Triple H dropped the title to The Rock at the following "pay-per-view", Survivor Series.

One controversy actually sparked what could be called the CWE's most popular original stables. In the weeks leading up to Wrestlemania 2000, Serena left the commentating table to introduce Sailor Moon into the CWE. A few weeks later, it was revealed that it was indeed Serena being the character. She won the CWE Title at No Way Out 2000. The controversy began when Serena was unceremoniously dumped in the storyline by Darien. this continued by Darien attacking Serena on several occasions (and even sparked a Darien versus Casto matchup at that year's Wrestlemania). Due to many preconceptions about the canon relationship of Serena and Darien in Sailor Moon and how it should never be messed with in fanfiction, many were angered by this sudden heel turn by Darien. However, this was magnified by another issue in the storyline: Serena was to face her canon mother, Queen Serenity, for the title at that Wrestlemania. Darkpower had originally planned on the Darien/Serena break-up angle to last until the summer of 2000. However, due to many angered fans, the plan had to be changed, even though DP insisted on Darien remaining heel regardless. The end result was changed to be Darien and Serena making the entire break-up angle a set up to make it easier for Serena to retain the title, thereby making Serena a heel, as well. This worked in the CWE's favor, however, since the couple actually began to get over as heels, and the term "Devil Couple" to describe them came about a few weeks later. Later on, Misty Waterflower was added in another storyline in which Reenie was sickened at the heel turn of Serena, and Serena saying that Reenie was no longer a daughter to her. Misty and Reenie had a match at Backlash the same year with the stipulation of the winner being called the true daughter of Serena, with Misty winning the match with the help of the Devil Couple. One night later, the stable name "Devil Family" was born, and the stable lasted up until the first hiatus period of the CWE. The stable returned during the Invasion angle, this time with Serenity turning heel and joining Serena. However, the heel alignment was short lived as Darkpower approached them to join them against the Alliance.

Another recent controversy was regarding a major addition to the CWE SmackDown roster, Kim Possible, in 2003. It was thought of that because no non-Anime character has graced the CWE ring before (a two episode stint of Spider-Man when the series first "hit mainstream" was seen, but not in a serious role), and because of the network affiliation Kim Possible had, Disney, she shouldn't have been able to be competing in a CWE ring. However, this move proved to work out in a positive light, due to her being used in a more serious light, and because of the cult-like status of the Kim Possible show on the Disney Channel. KP is now considered a mainstay of the CWE roster.

Exclusives

[edit]

Although the CWE used the WWE belt names, the CWE did create its own South East Asian title belt, made in 2000 and was dropped in 2001. The belt was later resurrected in 2003 and has remained in existence since on the SmackDown brand.

Future of the CWE

[edit]

Although actual episodes of the CWE have not been written, it is believed that the CWE is still being performed. Thus, when new episodes are made, it is shown in the assumption that nothing has stopped, and show "transcripts" are written in the middle of an angle. Therefore, many belts are given holders during the "hiatus" periods that would seem reasonable given current situations and how situations would be.

Although many fanfiction sites refuse to accept script-format stories, Darkpower has explicitly refused to write the CWE any other way, citing that a CWE book-formatted form would "be corny", and that the script-format is the only way for the CWE to work in the way that it does.

It was reported for Darkpower to make the CWE a Darkpower: The Site exclusive. However, Darkpower has recently expressed interest to release the CWE on Fanlib, albeit with possibly controversies regarding Fanlib's privacy policy (currently, there is no written rule on Fanlib restricting script fics). Darkpower has also expressed intrests in beginning a "CWE 24/7" service on Yahoo! Groups, similar to WWE's 24/7 Video On Demand service, to "fill in the gaps" of the hiatuses and to provide a historical feel to the CWE.
